Ada is a programming language that is the result of a design competition conducted by the U.S. Department of Defense in the 1980's. Ada is a general purpose full-featured programming language. The original specification of the Ada programming language was modified resulting in what is known as Ada 95. The language is names for Countess Ada Lovelace who was an acquaintance of Charles Babbage. Presumably, she programmed the Analytical Engine designed by Babbage and as such may be considered to be the first computer programmer.
